This artwork furthers the artist’s project from SEE DJERBA 2023. It vents into the hidden qualities of water in a methodical and scientifically informed process. Drawing from a range of water sources across various Mediterranean countries, she embarks on a journey that bridges the gap between scientific inquiry and artistic research.
Once collected, the water samples were subjected to a careful drying process under controlled scientific conditions, leaving behind a variety of sediments. These residues became the focus of her investigation. Utilizing microscopy, she delves into the structures of these sediments, uncovering the crystalline formations that are invisible to the naked eye. To further illuminate their composition, the artist employs a polarizing filter, which transforms the microscopic particles into vibrant, colored formations. She then curates these crystalline forms, selecting the most compelling among them to create a series of visuals.
These images transcend their scientific origins, becoming an artistic collection where the local waters’ qualities drive artistic expression. Presented as a large-scale projection, the artwork invites viewers to contemplate the contrast between the water stress of too much water in the Northern Mediterranean countries and too little in the Southern ones.
Dorra’s latest work presents a compelling exploration of Mediterranean identity through the medium of water. Collecting samples from the northern shores of the southern Mediterranean, the artist subjected these liquid archives to rigorous experimentation in her personal laboratory. The resulting photographs transcend mere documentation, capturing the essence of each sample’s origin and journey.
At SEE DJERBA, these images find a poignant home on the facade of the Djerba Traditional Heritage Museum. This site-specific installation creates a dialogue between contemporary art and historical context, inviting viewers to contemplate the interconnectedness of Mediterranean cultures and shared environmental concerns. Dorra’s work thus serves as a visual meditation on the fluid nature of borders and identities in the region
STATEMENT
As an artist who has dedicated significant attention to water-related themes in recent projects, including the microscopic examination of dried water, working with samples sourced directly from the region’s waters presents an invaluable opportunity for artistic exploration and development. This direct engagement with local elements enhances my work’s authenticity and fosters a deeper understanding of the environmental and cultural contexts that influence artistic expression.
