Flows of Entropy (2024)

“Flow of Entropy” is an immersive artwork that explores entropy as both a scientific principle and a metaphor for the environmental challenges faced by Djerba.

Drawing on transdisciplinary research, the installation delves into the microscopic structures of salt, using 3D-printed objects made of UV-responsive resin to represent these intricate patterns. The artwork is further enhanced with additional light sources and light-responsive materials. The installation is formed as a kinetic mobile set in motion by visitors moving in space.

By examining salt at a microscopic level, the artwork reflects on the interaction of salt, light, heat, and water — elements crucial to understanding the environmental dynamics on Djerba. By merging art and science, “Flow of Entropy” invites visitors to contemplate the interconnectedness of natural processes and human impact, fostering a greater appreciation for the necessity of preserving our planet’s precious resources. As Djerba’s groundwater reserves dwindle, this artwork emphasizes the delicate balance required to sustain life, urging a deeper awareness of the need for sustainable practices.

BACKGROUND

Rafael Soto Acebal, also known as Nyzuz, is an Argentine artist and architect, currently studying Digital Media at the University of the Arts in Bremen, Germany. His artistic work investigates the exploration of the relationship between the human being and the creation of new forms of order and organization, particularly in “far from equilibrium” systems. Through an interdisciplinary practice that encompasses the manipulation and distortion of light and space, analog video art, digital art, electronic art and the tension (physical and conceptual) articulating between the stable and the fluctuating, the natural and the artificial.
