Dead Zone
The spatial projection combines speculative data visualization, environmental care, and immersive digital art practices. With TouchDesigner as the primary creative tool, “Dead Zone” belongs to the field of generative art.
The starting point for artistic exploration is the salinization of the sea and surrounding landscapes by desalination plants to produce drinking water. One environmental problem is the waste water from desalination plants, which is returned to the sea. This creates a cycle that continuously increases the salt concentration in the region. This increasing salinization not only affects marine ecosystems but can also impact coastal areas and the adjacent inland. “Dead Zone” combines scientific research with aesthetic speculation and visualizes the transit of a living ecosystem into a salt desert.
Focusing on a specific Tunisian ecosystem, the work resists generalized narratives about climate change and highlights the localized effects of environmental degradation. The artwork’s speculative nature, which projects a possible future based on current trends, places it within the emerging genre of “cli-fi” (climate fiction) in the visual arts. This approach uses imagination and extrapolation to visualize possible futures.
BACKGROUND
Zeineb Kaabi is an artist who specializes in various mediums such as paintings, installations, interactive installations, light-based installations, and design. With a background in social and cultural anthropology, she brings a unique perspective to her artistic process. Zeineb experiments with techniques like overhead projectors and video art to create visually captivating and immersive experiences for viewers. Her work focuses on pushing boundaries, challenging perceptions, and engaging audiences in thought-provoking ways.
