Home(,)Calling (2024)

“Home(,)Calling” is an aesthetic experiment that engages with ice melting through experimental sound, light, and spatial interaction. Central to the piece is an ice cube that symbolizes fragility and the transient nature of physical states, much like glaciers in a warming world.

Three heating light bulbs act as symbolic guides, representing the binary of “1” and “0,” as well as the “ambiguities” in between, casting light not just physically but metaphorically on the ice’s journey. Two sound boxes produce audio cues, representing the varied and evolving sounds people carry with them in the modern age. These sounds influence the melting and reshaping of the ice. The motorized turntable allows the ice to rotate, responding to the sounds and the guidance of the lights.

The installation captures the tension between familiarity and disorientation that modern technology introduces, complicating our understanding of place and belonging.

Situated within the Sidi Zitouni sector of the Djerba Traditional Heritage Museum, this installation commands the focal point of its carefully selected space. The artwork captivates viewers with its enigmatic centerpiece: a pedestal supporting a luminous, rotating ice cube. This seemingly simple object becomes a nexus of sensory experience, enhanced by the implementation of a resonance speaker.

The piece is enveloped in an unsettling auditory landscape, created through distorted recordings of ambient sounds from both the island of Djerba and the artist’s hometown. These manipulated audio elements, emitted as low-frequency vibrations, permeate the exhibition space, creating a visceral, immersive environment that blends local heritage with contemporary artistic practice.
